How do I access MSDE?

Hi,
I don't have Visual Studio, so I'm using web matrix and MSDE. My question is, how do I get to MSDE? I don't have the enterprise manager that comes with SQL Server. Thanks
amitDownload the SQL Server Web Data Administrator
Easily manage your SQL Server and MSDE data, wherever you are. Use this tool to create and edit databases, manage users and roles, export and import database schema and data, and more—all from your favorite Web browser. Available from the Microsoft Download Center

How Do Add a DB Connection to a Table in SQL Server Express using Visual Web Developer?

I'm developing using Visual Web Developer and want to have a web page that shows the contents of a table. I get the error message when testing the connection through database explorer "Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection".

The database is located on a server running IIS and has SQL Server Express installed.

u may need to change the connection string to something like

Server=ServerAddress;Database=DataBase;User ID=Username;Password=Password;Trusted_Connection=False

From MS:

During a logon process to SQL server the following error may appear:"Login failed for user 'username'. The user is not associated with atrusted SQL Server connection. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)".

The SQL server has been configured to operate in "Windows Authentication Mode (Windows Authentication)" and doesn't allow
the use of SQL accounts.

Change the Authentication Mode of the SQL server from "Windows Authentication Mode (Windows Authentication)"
to "Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication)".

Hope this helps

How Connect Sybase ASE 12.0 - OLE DB?

Hi:

How connect Microsoft Visual Studio BI with Sybase ASE 12.0 (not 12.5.x) database via OLE DB?

I try with "Srvr=Paradise,[PORT];Catalog=[DBNAME];User Id=[USER];Password=[PASSWORD];" but error

"Error en la conexión de prueba debido a un error al inicializar el proveedor. El proveedor 'Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider.2' no está registrado en el equipo local."

Thanks

You need to have Sybase ASE OLEDB Provider installed in the machine where you are executing.

Thanks

How cany I publish 1 table from an attached database?

Hello,

In my vb.net application, I have an attached database called dbMaster with the following tables:

tblCustomer, tblProducts, tblUsers

In visual studio 2005, is it possible to publish only one table? My problem is, is that I want to send my end users updated data from my tblCustomer, and am finding that on my test laptop, if I publish dbMaster, it sends all tables when I just want one to be sent.

Thanks in advance.

Are you taking about setting up a Replication Publication? SQL Express doesn't support Replication Publications.

Mike

|||

Yes, I was thinking along those lines, but could not find any support for it... ok thanks.

|||

Replication will allow you to specify specific tables, refered to as Articles, as part of the Publication. You'll just need to look at one of the other Editions of SQL Server to be the Publisher. I typically recommend SQL Workgroup Edition for small scale systems.

Mike

|||I'm working on a mobile application. I want to have a desktop database that is kept in sync with a handheld database, with updates occurring on both ends. To keep them synchronized, I am investigating the use of both RDA and Replication. I've gotten RDA to work, but have found a major drawback: Every time you sync, you have to basically pull down a new version of ALL the data, not just the changes.

So I started to look into using Replication. If I understand correctly, using Replication, you can do synchronization where only the changes have to be exchanged between the handheld device and the desktop computer. But as I just found out from the above post, you cannot create a Publication using SQLExpress.

Why do I want to use SQLExpress? Because I need a version of SQL Server that I can distribute for free with my application. Am I wrong, or is SQLExpress that only one that has a free redistributable?

Taking a step back, am I missing something? Is there a better (simpler?) alternative to RDA and Replication?

Thanks for any advice!

Tom

How can you use VSS to manage stored procedures

Can anyone explain how to use the VSS integration in SSMS to mange stored
procedures? We use VSS to manage source code in Visual Studio but I can't
figure out how this is done with stored procedures in SMSS
What I do is:
1) Create a Solution for stored procedures.
2) Add the solution to Source Control
3) Add a new query.
4) Select a stored procedure
5) Script the SP as CREATE to clipboard
6) Paste into the new query
7) Add extra code at the bottom to grant permissions
8) Rename NewQuery.sql to my_SP.sql in the solution explorer
9) Check in pending check ins
10) repeat steps 3 to 9 until you have all your SP's under Source Control
I always script an existing sp as create so that I can't accidentally hit F5
You can do things like add a separate project to the solution for each
database or a separate solution for each database or any other way that
suits your way of organising things.

How can only certain objects (dimensions, cubes) be deployed?

How can only certain objects (dimensions, cubes) be deployed?

From Visual Studio I would like to deploy individual items like a dimension or cube without all of the changes in the other objects being deployed.

I don’t see any way to do that. Every time one thing gets deployed, all changes get deployed.

Visual Studio sends a Message Box Stating that the whole SSAS Database will be overwritten on the server and asks if you want to deploy or not.

We have multiple developers working and it has become a problem. We can’t deploy just those changes that are ready without overwriting the whole database.

I feel your pain...I have the same issues here (even though I'm the only developer on our BI apps). One possibility could be to have your developers work directly on the dev analysis server and add objects there. Then, you can use SSMS to individually process objects (dimensions, partitions, measure groups, etc). I'm also going to try deploying all my changes to a "staging" Analytics Database, which could be swapped out with the production DB when necessary.

It'd be great if there was a set of best-practices around the complete SSAS lifecycle.|||

While the underlying XMLA commands do support deploying single objects like a cube or dimension, it can get a bit difficult to manage due to the dependancy relationships between the various objects.

Probably a better approach with multiple developers would be to use a version control system. This way you could check-in your changes and do a "get latest" to make sure you are deploying the latest version of all the objects.

Although having said this, by remarkable coincidence I have been working on an add-in for Visual Studio that lets you deploy only the calculation script for a cube. It would probably be technically possible to extend this to deploy just a cube or dimension, but I am still concerned about the effect that this may have on dependant objects if you had multiple developers working on the same database. I still think it would be worth looking into using a version control system.

|||

We use Visual SourceSafe. The situation is as follows:

I have the Time dimension checked out and am making changes. Bob has the CashRecxeipts cube checked out and is making changes.

If I finish 1st and am ready to deploy the new Time dimension, it will invalidate all cubes that use the Time dimension. Bob will have to get the latest version of the Time dimension and fix the relatoinships for it in the CashReceipts cube before he deploys his changes.

If Bob deploys without getting the latest version of the Time dimension he will overwrite my changes.

Also, I have to modify all cubes that use the Time dimension and check their relationships to the Time dimension before I can deploy. I can't modify the CashReceipts cube because Bob has it checked out. I am at a standstill.

It is very difficult to coordinate with developers when we are in different cities.

|||

I don't see any easy answer to your question.

In your scenario, it might be possible to write something that would deploy just the altered time dimension and just the CashReceipts cube, but if you did this the CashReciepts cube would still be broken if it was not first adjusted to cater for the changes in the time dimension.

One approach that is sometimes employed (not with SSAS as far as I know, but the theory would still apply) is to have only one person (or process) that deploys to the server. They do a "get latest" from Source Safe, check that everything builds and then deploys, if anyone wants to get something new onto the server they have to check their changes in and let this person know. Ideally each developer should have their own local copy of the DB, preferrably with a small set of data so that they can process it quickly and test their changes before checking them in.

There are even tools that exist for platforms like .Net and Java, that will check the latest code out of the version control system when a new checkin is detected and build and deploy. I don't think any of these tools have hooks to SSAS, but most of them are fairly extensible. CruiseControl.Net http://ccnet.thoughtworks.com/ is one example, if you search for "Continuous Integration" you should be able to find others.

Mark Garner http://mgarner.wordpress.com/ has done some posts on his blog about applying these sorts of principles to Data Marts http://wordpress.com/tag/agile-data-warehouse/

Darren,

Thanks for your suggestions and information on tools and procedures. They are good ideas and should prove helpful.

How can I transfer Data From Access?

Hi, I have an Access 97 Database. I have Visual Studio 2005. Can I
use VS 2005 To upload data from Access 97 to my SQL Server database? I
tried the upsizing wizard for Access 97, but it just gives an error
"Overflow." If I can't use Access, is there anyway to import a CSV set
of data into my SQL Server using the SQL Server manager tools?
Thank you for any help.
Refer to the following:
ACC97: "Overflow" Error Message When You Try to Upsize to
SQL Server 2000

You can import CSV files into SQL Server using Data
Transformation Services (DTS).

Thank you. I will try that (SQL Server Express 2005). I found also
that I could right click on the table and export to ODBC datasource.
|||Then stick with the Export option. DTS isn't part of SQL Express.
